Acmena, Acmenosperma, Cleistocalyx, Piliocalyx and Waterhousea formally transferred to Syzygium (Myrtaceae) Naturalis
Craven, L.A.; Biffin, E.; Ashton, P.S..
Based on morphological and molecular data, we have concluded that Acmena, Acmenosperma, Cleistocalyx, Piliocalyx and Waterhousea should be combined with Syzygium. The five genera are formally transferred to Syzygium and new names provided for those of their accepted representatives for which names are as yet not available in Syzygium, with the exception of the New Caledonian members of Piliocalyx as these currently are being revised.

An infrageneric classification of Syzygium (Myrtaceae) Naturalis
Craven, L.A.; Biffin, E..
An infrageneric classification of Syzygium based upon evolutionary relationships as inferred from analyses of nuclear and plastid DNA sequence data, and supported by morphological evidence, is presented. Six subgenera and seven sections are recognised. An identification key is provided and names proposed for two species newly transferred to Syzygium.

Anetholea anisata transferred to, and two new Australian taxa of, Syzygium (Myrtaceae) Naturalis
Craven, L.A.; Biffin, E..
The distinction between Anetholea and Syzygium is lessened due to the occurrence of epigeal germination and dry fruitedness in the latter genus also and it is concluded that Anetholea is better placed within Syzygium. Analysis of sequence data from nuclear ribosomal DNA and the chloroplast genome support this conclusion. The sole species of Anetholea, A. anisata, is transferred to Syzygium and the new combination, S. anisatum (Vickery) Craven & Biffin, made. Syzygium wilsonii subsp. cryptophlebium is reinstated at species rank, necessitating the new combination, S. cryptophlebium (F. Muell.) Craven & Biffin. Two new taxa of Syzygium are described from Australia, S. wilsonii subsp. epigaeum Craven & Biffin and S. maraca Craven & Biffin.

Novelties on Eucalyptus include: Antennariella placitae, Bagadiella lunata, Cladoriella rubrigena, C. paleospora, Cyphellophora eucalypti, Elsinoë eucalypticola, Foliocryphia eucalypti, Leptoxyphium madagascariense, Neofabraea eucalypti, Polyscytalum algarvense, Quambalaria simpsonii, Selenophoma australiensis, Sphaceloma tectificae, Strelitziana australiensis and Zeloasperisporium eucalyptorum. Stylaspergillus synanamorphs are reported for two species of...

Numerical analysis of Thai members of the Eugenia-Syzygium group (Myrtaceae) Naturalis
Parnell, J..
Four different analyses of Thai Syzygium show, with very small discrepancies, that one smaller monophyletic and one larger polyphyletic group can be recognised. The smaller monophyletic group warrants sectional rank as Syzygium section Jambosa and consists of S. anacardiifolium, S. aqueum, S. diospyrifolium, S. formosum, S. foxworthianum, S. jambos, S. lakshanakarae, S. malaccense, S. megacarpum, S. papillosum, S. pseudoformosum, S. pycnanthum, S. samarangense, S. scortechinii and S. siamense.

Plant biometrics of malay, rose and water apple Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Nacata,Guilherme; Andrade,Renata Aparecida de.
Abstract Due to the lack of studies comparing Syzygium malaccensis(L) Meer e Perry, Syzygium aqueum Burm.f. and Syzygium jambos (L) Alston Syzygium in relation to the botanical genus Sygygium regarding the physical characteristics, the present research was conducted, aiming at biometrically characterizing each of the three species, as well as comparing them. The fruits were collected from the São Paulo State University (Unesp), School of Agricultural and Veterinarian Sciences, Jaboticabal. Syzygium plants were used for the evaluation of: fruit and seed masses (g); width and length of leaves (cm) and of seeds (cm); percentage of fruit pulp; length of leaf petiole (cm); and leaf area (cm2). Fifty fruits, leaves and seeds of each species were used, with 5...

Pollen morphology and availability of pollen and stigma in Syzygium (Myrtaceae) Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Nacata,Guilherme; Belonsi,Talita Kely; Gasparino,Eduardo Custódio; Andrade,Renata Aparecida de.
Abstract The present study aimed to describe the pollen morphology in three species of Syzygium, to test pollen availability and stigma receptivity. The pollen was analyzed by light and scanning microscopy to show the detailed ornamentation of the pollen grains. Pollen availability was measured according to two protocols. Stigmatic receptivity was tested at different stages of flower development. There are differences among the pollen morphology for the species studied; when the polar and equatorial diameters are measured in the equatorial view of the pollen grains, it is observed that S. jambos is the largest species concerning the two values of the diameters, S. malaccense is the smallest species and S. aqueum, the largest species in relation to the...

Pollen of Syzygium (Myrtaceae) from SE Asia, especially Thailand Naturalis
Parnell, J..
Pollen of 57 species of Syzygium from SE Asia were surveyed by SEM. The grains are all ± triangular in polar view, uniformly small (mean diameter 10.4 μm) with few surface sculpturing features. All species examined exhibit a distinct apocolpium and, usually, apocolpial field. The presence of an apocolpial field cannot be linked to any known taxonomic grouping within the genus. It does not appear possible to distinguish the species of Syzygium on the basis of features of the pollen visible under SEM, though section Jambosa tends to have larger pollen with a proportionally larger apocolpium than species not in that section. Estimates for the number of pollen grains per stamen in species with larger pollen grains (± section Jambosa) are 5× as great as for...

South Pacific Cleistocalyx transferred to Syzygium (Myrtaceae) Naturalis
Biffin, E.; Craven, L.A.; Tuiwawa, M.; Crisp, M.D.; Gadek, P.A..
Evidence from both morphological and molecular phylogenetic data support the view that the circumscissile calycine calyptra, the sole defining character of Cleistocalyx, has multiple origins within Syzygium s. l. and is therefore an invalid basis for generic circumscription. Accordingly, the Fijian Cleistocalyx are transferred to Syzygium, and the new combinations Syzygium decussatus, S. eugenioides and S. seemannii, are made. Syzygium myrtoides is reinstated, and Cleistocalyx ellipticus, C. longiflorus, C. kasiensis and C. seemannii var. punctatus are reduced to the synonymy of S. seemannii. The distribution of S. seemannii is extended to Vanuatu.

The genus Syzygium (Myrtaceae) in Vanuatu Naturalis
Tuiwawa, S.H.; Craven, L.A.; Sam, C.; Crisp, M.D..
Twenty species of Syzygium occur in Vanuatu of which eighteen are indigenous (six being endemic and one being an ancient introduction) and two are recently introduced. Three species are newly described: S. chanelii, S. flabellum and S. vanuatuense. The Syzygium flora of Vanuatu has strong links at species level to that of the Solomon Islands and Fiji, less strong links to elsewhere in the southwest Pacific and apparently no links to New Caledonia. Descriptions are provided for each species occurring in Vanuatu and identification keys are provided for flowering and vegetative material.
